Is it anything like the Atkins diet

Roberts Atkins was a cardiologist who, in the 1960s, was trying to find a way to lose weight. After reading reports about the relationships between carbohrdrate, insulin and fat, he pioneered a formula for controlling weight by controlling insulin. Originally he just relyed in a pure protein diet. This was long before the GI and originally he just had people lose weight by eating meat. As time went by he eventually worked out exactly how much carbohydrate you could give a person and still have them loose weight. So by restricting the person’s intake of carbohydrates and getting them to eat lots of protein he was able to achieve good results with weight loss. This method is now known as ‘the Atkins Diet’. Unfortunately for Dr. Atkins, restricting the amount of carbohydrate and getting people to eat lots of meat became the biggest criticism of his method and many people attacked him for promoting an ‘unhealthy diet’.

When a person is on a low GI diet, the amount of carbohydrate doesn’t matter. What does matter is the type. As a result one can have as much of low GI carbohydrate with their protein meal as they like. It doesn’t matter and, as I said before, be moderate with the moderate carbs, and you should get good results.

Should I take vitamins and minerals

The idea is that you get your vitamins and minerals from having a balanced diet. That being said I have always taken vitamins since childhood so it’s a matter of preference. If you are buying a supplement then make sure that sugar or starch is not listed as an ingredient. You would be surprized what you find when you rate the label. Just as an aside it is interesting to note that Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA)was actually something that was determine at the start of World War II when England, fearing being blockaded by the Germans, wanted to know what the absolute minimum amount of vitamin people could take without developing illnesses like scurvy. The RDA means you are only getting the minimum amount of nutrients without becoming ill. Personally vitamin and mineral supplements are much of a muchness and I think whatever brands you buy comes down to personal preference.
