Thalassemia Symptoms - Different signs and symptoms of thalassemia

The symptoms of thalassemia depend on the type and severity of the disease. Symptoms occur when not enough oxygen gets to various parts of the body due to low hemoglobin and a shortage of red blood cells in the blood (anemia).

The following are the some of the symptoms of the thalassemia.

Paleness
Headaches
Fatigue
Bone deformities in the face
Shortness of breath
Constipation
Spleen enlargement

Babies with the most severe type of alpha thalassemia (hydrops fetalis) die before birth or soon after birth.
The diagnosis of thalassemia trait and thalassemia major is made from microscopic examination of the blood, which shows many small, pale red blood cells, and from other blood tests that show reduced levels of adult hemoglobin in the blood.
