Boils (also called furuncles) are caused by an infection of the hair follicles with the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus.
A boil, also referred to as a skin abscess, is a localized infection deep in the skin. A boil generally starts as a reddened, tender area.
Some people have multiple or recurrent boils. These boils are usually Staph infections (furuncles or carbuncles). The bacteria are picked up somewhere and then live on the skin, crowding out the normal, harmless bacteria we all carry. The source may be a family member, a pet or just appear "out of the blue."
What causes boils?
Boils can occur anywhere on your skin, but appear mainly on your face, neck, armpits, buttocks or thighs - hair-bearing areas where you're most likely to sweat or experience friction.
Symptoms of boil
A boil looks like a red, swollen, painful bump under the skin. As the infection progresses, a whitish tip, also called a point or head, can appear at the center of the boil. This tip is usually the area where the boil's pus will drain. A carbuncle looks like a cluster of interconnected boils.
