Cholera was first described in a scientific manner by the physician Garcia de Orta in the 16th century.
Cholera is an acute, diarrheal illness caused by infection of the intestine with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae . The infection is often mild or without symptoms, but sometimes it can be severe.
When cholera occurs in an unprepared community, case-fatality rates may be as high as 50% - usually because there are no facilities for treatment, or because treatment is given too late. In contrast, a well-organized response in a country with a well established diarrhoeal disease control programme can limit the case-fatality rate to less than 1%.
Cholera symptom
- leg cramps
- a rapid onset of dehydration
- copious, painless, watery diarrhoea that can quickly lead to severe dehydration and death if treatment is not promptly given
- Vomiting also occurs in most patients.
- a profuse secretory-type watery diarrhea, with flecks of mucous material (rice water).
- abdominal pains.
Cause of Cholera
Cholera occurs in epidemics when conditions of poor sanitation, crowding, war, and famine are present. Endemic areas include India, Asia, Africa, the Mediterranean, and more recently, South and Central America, and Mexico. The infection is acquired by ingesting contaminated food or water.
The infectious dose of bacteria required to cause clinical disease varies with the mode of administration. The use of antacids, histamine receptor blockers, and proton pump inhibitors increases the risk of cholera infection and predisposes patients to more severe disease as a result of reduced gastric acidity. The same applies to patients with chronic gastritis secondary to Helicobacter pylori infection or those who have had a gastrectomy.
