Vitamin and Minerals for Skin

The number of skin care products containing vitamins has more than tripled since 1991. Most people are deficient in vitamins, minerals and herbs that are important for your body to function properly.

Your skin badly craves for nutrients, but is not that lucky enough to get a regular dose of nutrients. There are vitamins for healthy skin like vitamin A, C and E, which if not consumed properly, can lead to dull lifeless skin.

Vitamin B Complex. When it comes to skin, the single most important B vitamin is biotin, a nutrient that forms the basis of skin, nail, and hair cells.

Vitamins C and E. Among the most important new dermatologic discoveries is the power of vitamins to counter the effects of sun exposure. Topical Vitamin C can prevent the consequences of prolonged sun exposure which can lead to skin cancer. Today, Vitamin C is believed to play a very important role in providing firmer, smoother and more youthful looking skin when used from a formulation that penetrates deep within the skin.

Vitamin A This fat-soluble vitamin is essential for the maintenance and healing of epithelial tissues, with skin being the largest expanse of epithelial tissue you've got.

Selenium The damaging effects of ultraviolet light are minimized by this antioxidant mineral, thereby reducing your risk for sunburn.

Zinc This trace mineral helps maintain collagen and elastin fibers that give skin its firmness, helping to prevent sagging and wrinkles.

Copper is found in a variety of foods and its deficiency is uncommon except in people taking zinc supplements.

Practically all vitamins and minerals are needed for healthy skin, but some are especially important.
