Glucosamine Chondroitin - Benefits and side effects of Glucosamine Chondroitin Supplements

Glucosamine chondroitin sulfates are substances which are found in the body naturally. Glucosamine is one of the forms of amino sugar that plays an important role in the cartilage repair and formation. Chondroitin sulfate gives elasticity to the cartilage and a part of a large protein molecule. These both are available in the market as nutritional and dietary supplements. They are obtained from animal tissue such as glucosamine from lobster, crab or shrimp shells and chondroitin sulfate is obtained from animal cartilage like shark or tracheas cartilage. They both are considered as the building blocks for proteoglycans and enhance building of new collagen.

These both supplements also reduce pain of those people who are suffering from osteoarthritis within several weeks or months. Glucosamine makes the cartilage more rigid and stronger. Glucosamine is also available in various chemical forms such as glucosamine sulfate and glucosamine hydrochloride.

How does Glucosamine Chondroitin Sulfate work?

Studies shows that these supplements act as a pain relief for patients suffering from mild to moderate osteoarthritis and help in reducing pain in just few weeks. It has a similar effect as compared to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen and aspirin. According to research, these supplements also reduce the damage done to cartilage in people suffering from osteoarthritis. Chondroitin promotes elasticity in cartilage and water retention and prohibits enzymes which break down the cartilage. These supplements are also used in the treatment of degenerative joint disease.

tip of the day

Potatoes are a good source of vitamins A and C. Contrary to popular belief, potatoes themselves are not high in calories. It is all those high-fat ingredients cooked with or served with the potato that can be fattening. To add flavour to your potato dishes without all the calories, try fresh herbs and spices, lemon juice, balsamic vinegar, skim ricotta cheese, or low-fat sauces..
